DRUMS IN THE SCHOOLS
GRADES K-12 (and beyond)

Following is a general description of my School Drumming Program.
Each program is unique as it is tailored to the ages and abilities of my audience.

Equipment Requirements: At the front of the room, one or two tables, 5-7 chairs.
Optional: whiteboard. Audience sits in chairs and/or on the floor.
Time of Program: Approximately 45 -to 60 minutes (flexible)
Set-up/Take-down time: About 15-20 minutes on either end. I will arrive with a variety of drums and smaller percussion.

TITLE: JUST SAY YES TO DRUMS!

In this lively, "upbeat" presentation, I will play some of the many kinds of hand drums enjoying great popu-larity these days; these include Cuban congas, African ashikos and djembes and Middle Eastern dumbeks. The young people will learn some of the history of these drums and about their construction. The audience will be invited to clap along with the drumming and some enjoyable rhythm games will be played. I will also demonstrate a variety of traditional hand percussion, such as claves, maracas, and bells. To keep things light, I also play more humorous and unconventional percussive instru-ments and show some "tricks" that one can do to produce unusual sounds with everyday percussion (i.e. a can of unpopped corn).
Children will learn the names and origins of many rhythms and they'll receive a brief lesson in technique, after which volunteers will be invited to come up and play the drums and hand percussion. We will then have an impromptu percussion band playing a sim-ple rhythm. The audience will clap and sing along.
The program ends with a question and answer section.
*************
Students will discover/intuit that learning to drum is within everyone's grasp, that there are wonderful feelings to be had from the informed and disciplined expression of rhythm, that drums and other instruments should be treated respectfully, and that the drum is very special because it aids in the creation of community - witness the increasingly common phenomenon called the "drum circle" - in that the rules that govern a successful musical ensemble ap-ply to the harmonious operation of society, as well.

CURRICULUM VITAE: SIMONE LaDRUMMA
I began studying hand (conga) drumming in 1986 and have been drumming professionally since 1987.
Through Drumming & The Holistic Expression of Rhythm, a course I created in 1991, I have taught thousands of people the rudiments of hand drumming and the joy of spontaneous musical expres-sion. Classes are taught privately at my studio in Seattle and in homes, businesses and institu-tions throughout Puget Sound, and also through the University of Washington's Experimental College (since 1992) and North Seattle Community College.

I have been an annual presenter at Seattle's widely-known Women of Wisdom Conference since 1993. I have also presented drumming workshops in Van-couver, BC, Can-ada; at Breitenbush Resort in Oregon and in New York City; Boise, Idaho; San Diego, California; Salt Lake City, Utah; Sedona, Arizona and Montclair, New Jersey.

Grants: In 1993 I received a grant from the King County Arts Commission for my work with incarcerated children at Echo Glen Children's Center in Issaquah.
